The device comes with a 6 AA battery holder that fits in the lower compartment. You can remove the holder and replace it with a plain 9V battery.

Both will work equally well but you can expect about 50 hours of play with the 6AA and about 10 hours with a single 9V battery. We find that using the 6AA batteries increases the weight of the device which makes it a little more stable.
